Sorry no update yesterday...I was exhausted - went home and slept for 5 hrs during the day! Kind of felt I was coming down with something - body pains, chills, feverish etc...but 2 Advils with lots of sleep on my own comfy bed did wonders for me!
So here's the update:
- They are doing a tracheostomy (or tracheotomy) today in the afternoon. It is a surgical procedure and will be done in 10 minutes is what the surgeon said. You can google that up if you like, but it is basically connecting the pipe directly to his windpipe (trachea) so that the oxygen, food etc can be directly administered through the trachea.
- This will allow him to be slowly weaned off the ventilator and the scary face harness comes off etc.
- This normally is done after 14 days of being on the ventilator, he's already kind of pushing it with 21 days on this.
- They increased the sedation levels back up again, because they want him comfortable and rested. If they reduce it, he always has his eyes open all day and is resisting the ventilator and biting down on it.
- His lung function still needs to get better for them to transition him off the ventilator - the tracheotomy is an in-between step.

WELCOME TO NOOK'S HEALTH BLOG - STATUS UPDATES
My name is Sangeetha and I am authoring this blog on behalf of my husband - Nook (to friends) a.k.a Babu (to family) to provide some level of communication in terms of updates on his difficult journey to our supportive family and friends who are as anxious as I am for him to completely heal, and be whole and healthy again! Thank you all for your prayers and words of support and encouragement.
Thanks - have been waiting for an update.
ReplyDeleteI hope you feel better Sangeetha. Was waiting for the update as well. I hope the procedure will go smoothly and will provide some comfort to Nook when he wakes up.
